Chapter 11

Grey peered down at Sal and gripped her shoulders, his stomach tied into a tight knot. “Okay, so you’re sure you know what to do, right? We’ve got to get him on tape saying he’s selling the baby. Forget the other stuff about Samantha for the moment. I know you hate that, but we still have no physical proof he killed her. We do have proof he wants to sell a baby. Stick to the plan, okay? Promise me you’ll stick to the plan. No variations. Please.”

She pressed her fingers to her ear, obviously to be sure the earpiece he and Carr so carefully fitted her with was in place. They could hear everything and she could hear them, he’d reassured himself.

Inhaling deeply, she nodded with a sharp bounce of her beautifully glossy black head. “I promise.”

“No fancy talk, no goading him this time, as good as you are at it. In and out. That’s it,” Grey insisted, his jaw tight and hard.

“Got it,” she replied, wiping her hands on her jeans and shivering, even though it was a beautiful seventy-two degrees in suburbia today.

“I’d go if I could, but I don’t know how long I can last,” Grey repeated for the hundredth time since this morning out of sheer guilt. Christ, she looked so small and fragile he wanted to haul her off somewhere safe and lock her up.

She licked her dry lips and gripped his wrists. “I know you can only skinwalk for a few minutes at a time. I get it. Don’t sound so guilty, Grey. If it goes sideways, it’s better he not catch you or we’ll lose him forever. I won’t let that happen. Please, it’s going to be okay.”

“And Calamity will be in the bushes. If he tries anything, she’ll whip up a spell or something,” Marty reassured, pressing a kiss to her cheek and giving her ponytail a tug.

“I’ll zap that tool so fast, he’ll shit himself,” the cat reassured, winding her tail around Sal’s legs. Grey had never met a familiar before, but she’d prove invaluable as a spy.

“We’re on in ten!” Carr called from the dining room.

That was the moment his stomach took a nosedive and he had to swallow several times to keep from upchucking his heart.

“Out of the way, Fifty Shades,” Nina crowed, shoving him aside. “You can slobber all over her when this is done.”

Grey took a step backward as Nina pulled Sal into a hug and ran her knuckles over her scalp. “You go shit all over his day, kiddo. If he twitches the wrong way, he’ll have the men and me all up in his shiz, okay? Now breathe, Banshee. Just breathe.”

She buried her face in Nina’s hoodie for only a moment before she whispered, “Okay, Marshmallow.”

“Shut the fuck up, Screamer,” Nina said back, setting Sal away from her with a grin and a final warning. “Be safe.”
